During the reign of the Cordovan Umayyad Caliphate, Cordoba was capital of the al-Andalus - encompasing almost all of Spain. Cordova was a leading world capital - far surpassing the wealth, education, culture or technology of London or Paris during the same period.

Heritage Monuments
The first Islamic monument built in the al-Andalus was the
Cordoba Mosque. From this point on, Islamic Art and Architecture greatly influenced future hispano-moorish art and architecture.
The Palatine city of Madinat az-Zahra, legends of the dazzling treasures of this palace - was what enfuriated the religious Berber fanatics and was torn down by Berber tribes, in 1010 AD when a fierce civil war erupted.

Contrasting Landscapes
Geology: the Southern Mediterranean, land and seascapes, altered dramatically as a result of Alpine Orogeny during the Palogene and Neogene eras. Sweeping white beaches of Cadiz contrast with sheer-cliff edged Nerja coves: The Nerja Caves were formed by Crystalline Dolomites. Their beauty attracted so many visitors, the Nerja Caves transformed into a leading National Monument.
Andalucia has twenty-three Natural Parks and two National Parks.

The Role of Islamic Science and Discovery
The al-Andalus, during the height of its success, entailed
all of Spain except a small region: Asturias.
Scientific progress, spurred the al-Andalus to staggering levels of erudition, resulting in enormous financial successes. The Renaissance was kindled by the knowledge derived from the Islamic Translation Movement - that very instruction became The Base of Universal Education.
